I first saw/heard Janelle Monae on the Letterman Show and let me tell you: If you haven’t already seen her stuff, go check it out. She’s got an unbridled sense of creativity and is phenomenally talented with an awesome range. She’s refreshingly different with a familiar old school flow. Think Etta James meets Outkast.

I like “Tightrope”, though, I can’t quite seem to get the dance down — despite hours of trying.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

Finally, I’ve been waiting for something to get me back into the game. It couldn’t be a more fitting title either. Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is a short film directed by Kevin Tancharoen (the guy who did Fame. You know, that musical with Catherine Zeta-Jones). It’s a pitch to get WB studios to pick it up for a feature — sort of like District 9 (Neil Blomkamp, made “Alive in Joburg”, which was picked up by Pete Jackson).

Kev Tancharoen couldn’t have picked a better time, WB has announced the release of a new Mortal Kombat video game for the 360 and PS3. The last time the series was visited was a year or so ago, with the release of Mortal Kombat vs. DC. Anyway, I digress. The point is, is that he couldn’t have picked a better time to release it. Since its release on June 7th, there have been more than 4 million views, and that’s just on the official youtube account, countless others have also posted the short.

Tancharoen has created better, more synthesized storylines with a somewhat believable plot. Which, given the character’s powers and abilities, is no walk in the park. And if you really think about it, isn’t Mortal Kombat essentially a far-fetched no-holds bar version of UFC?

If you can name an action hero from the past two decades, they’re probably in this movie. If this doesn’t get your testosterone pumping, I don’t know what will. The Expendables debuts August 31, 2010.
